Nuance releases solution to reduce paper usage

Workgroup’s retail division has announced the local availability of Nuance OmniPage 17, an upgraded version of its document conversion and OCR application.

OmniPage Professional 17 delivers technologies that enable a transition from paper to paperless. It places document conversion directly into Microsoft Office, integrating a “Direct OCR” button with Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

This makes it easier to turn paper and PDF into full formatted documents.

“This version also tackles the historical barrier to the green office – the lack of a practical alternative to the portability and convenience of paper,” says Gladwel Soko, Nuance product manager at Workgroup. “By leveraging recent advances in eBook technologies, highlighted by the popularity of the Amazon Kindle 2, OmniPage 17 includes features that maximise the value of ‘electronic paper’ to not only save trees but also deliver advantages over physical paper.

“The new release includes support for various eBook and PDF formats, as well as a ‘Scan to Kindle’ feature, with documents automatically reformatted specifically for easy reading and navigating using the Kindle 2 form factor.”

Soko goes on to say that time usually spent recreating and reformatting documents can now be saved by using OmniPage to automate these manual tasks. This version enables scan-to-Microsoft SharePoint as well, enabling the centralised archiving of paper as searchable PDF and Microsoft XPS formats in the popular content management system.

“The productivity gains delivered by OmniPage are a large part of its growth in popularity, especially when organisations are looking for tools that help overcome increasing workloads and shrinking staff.”
