AutoTrader to support growth of Motorcycle Industry
Dec 18th, 2017

The South Africa Bike Festival gets a major injection from AutoTrader, South Africa’s largest online automotive marketplace, who are stepping on board as title sponsor. The partnership spans a three-year commercial headline agreement, with the intention of boosting growth and investment in the South African motorcycle market.

eNaTIS data for October 2017 records over 11,7 million licensed vehicles on South African roads, with 3% (357 743) of these detailed as a motorcycle, motortricycle or quadrucycle.

“We are seeing the sector change from a hobbyist dominated pursuit to including a serious focus on viable transport solutions, particularly in our South African environment where traffic conjestion continues to rise” said AutoTrader CEO George Mienie. “We are delighted to be involved with an event of this nature and scale, which we believe will provide further growth to the industry and to our bikes platform.”

AutoTrader’s motorcycle portal has recorded substantial gains of late. Over 1,7 million visits in the past year makes the website the most visited motorcycle related publication in the country.

Furthermore, the AutoTrader South Africa Bike Festival will host an industry first conference, at which many of the challenges and opportunities facing the growing market will be discussed.

“Some of the biggest challenges to the growth of the industry are perceptions around the cost and safety of motorcycling” said Lachlan Harris, Director of AMID (Association of Motorcycle Importers & Distributors). “The truth is with essential rider training, the right protective rider gear and choosing a suitable model, motorcycles can provide independence and mobility to many communities” advises Harris. “Manufacturers are launching a variety of mid-range 300-500cc bikes in 2017/2018 in an effort to make biking more affordable and the AutoTrader South Africa Bike Festival is a great showcase for people to understand the benefits and see these new models. I’m looking forward to working with Clarion Events and the AutoTrader team alongside the industry key stakeholders to address the way forward to improve awareness of motorcycling in SA and grow the industry opportunities”.

Owned by Clarion Events UK, and further supported by Discovery Channel, the AutoTrader South Africa Bike Festival is the premiere motorcycle trade event in the country. Blending exhibitions of the newest biking trends from the world’s top brands with racing, parades, and the best of biking lifestyle, the three- day festival attracts dealers, riders and enthusiasts from around the country.

The event will run for a third consecutive year at the legendary Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, 25-27 May 2018. More details to follow in 2018.
