SA business must reduce electricity consumption

South African businesses must reduce their dependency on electricity

APC by Schneider Electric is calling for electrical contractors to join forces with Value Added Resellers (VARs) in order to promote the adoption of more efficient energy use and decrease wastage in power consumption.

In a recent announcement in the US, Schneider Electric’s chief innovation officer, Neil Rasmussen stated that every person and every business worldwide is going to be affected by the energy challenge. He maintains that while we do have a lot of energy sources that will last many generations, we stand to destroy the planet in a few generations if they become depleted.

“Our main objective is to slow down the production of carbon emissions,” explains Rodney Callaghan, MD: Southern Africa at APC by Schneider Electric. “In order to do this, we need to look at how power is consumed ‘from plant to plug’ and set out a path of products and best practices for building and data centre design, all aimed to help VARs improve the efficiency for end users.”

APC has delivered a suite of online tools such as power consumption calculators and a carbon calculator to give IT managers, CEOs and end-users some metrics and parameters to work out their current consumption and identify where potential savings can be made.

At the same time, APC by Schneider Electric has also announced that it will be working closely with IBM to provide its Tivoli network management interface with the ability to report power consumption and efficient IT metrics within its 8,000 installed base of large data centre installations.
