Motorola’s Innovative New Readers
Combination of RFID and bar code scanning technologies provides more options for partners and customers
The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced new radio frequency identification (RFID) solutions designed to help organizations gain increased visibility into business operations and deliver new levels of efficiency across the enterprise. Motorola’s DS9808-R is a next-generation hybrid presentation imager, introducing a brand new category of integrated RFID and bar code scanners for the retail point of sale (POS). The new MC9090-G RFID ER handheld reader leverages the award-winning features of the existing MC9090-G and adds extended range (ER) bar code scanning to increase productivity across the supply chain.
“With the introduction of the DS9808-R and new MC9090-G RFID ER, Motorola is further strengthening its RFID business and industrial-class portfolios, offering a greater opportunity for organizations to determine how RFID solutions can add business value across an enterprise,” said Mike Poldino, vice president and general manager of RFID, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “As the demand for RFID solutions grows, we will continue Motorola’s strong tradition of innovating across our portfolio, building on our legacy leadership positions in bar code scanning and RFID solutions and driving application-specific enhancements to help our customers achieve their business goals.”
Motorola DS9808-R – Redefining the POS with Its Innovative Hybrid Design
Motorola’s DS9808-R is a high-performance, hybrid presentation imager with integrated RFID that is designed for both hands-free and handheld bar code scanning and RFID reading in a dynamic retail POS environment. With its unique combination of features and functionality, the DS9808-R is a ground-breaking device that represents two industry firsts. The DS9808-R is not only the first combination 1D/2D bar code scanner and RFID reader, but also the first combination handheld/hands-free UHF RFID reader. This new solution helps retailers realize the proven benefits of real-time item level inventory visibility, including timely re-ordering to eliminate out-of-stocks and the associated lost sales; increased inventory turns, which in turn reduce inventory carrying costs; real-time trending analysis for better purchasing decisions that put more of the products customers want on the shelves; and the ability to ensure timely replenishment of shelves with minimal human intervention.
The DS9808-R imager provides the ability to capture a comprehensive array of data capture technologies in record speed, including 1D or 2D bar codes, PDF417 symbologies and UHF RFID tags. With built-in support for emerging mobile retail applications, including the ability to read bar codes and images from a mobile phone display, retailers can now accommodate virtually any type of POS and emerging inventory management application with a single, cost-effective device.
With its comprehensive RFID feature set, the new DS9808-R enables retailers to maximize the value of RFID technology in the store while providing tag reading capabilities to complete purchases quickly and efficiently. The DS9809-R enables:
· RFID usage for POS checkout, price checking, new inventory commission, separated inventory identification (e.g., fitting rooms) and returns processing
· Instant translation of the RFID EPC tag data to UPC bar code data, allowing retailers to implement RFID information into existing bar code-based inventory applications
Motorola MC9090-G RFID ER – Extended-range Scanning for the Most Rugged Environments
The new MC9090-G RFID ER introduces extended-range scanning technology to Motorola’s successful line of MC9090-G RFID handheld readers for improved performance in environments that require long-range scanning capabilities. The MC9090-G RFID ER provides user flexibility across the enterprise with the ability to capture 1D bar codes from as close as four inches to as far as 40 feet – eliminating the need and associated costs of using multiple devices for disparate and specific work tasks.
“Motorola’s extended range MC9090-G ER mobile computer has provided us with exactly the tool we need to continue to expand our RFID-enabled pallet pooling business into new markets while maximizing the business benefits for our customers,” said Jack Sparn, chief information officer, iGPS. “Motorola, and its partner epcSolutions, have been valuable partners in the continued success of our growing business.”
With support for U.S. and Asia-Pacific frequencies, and the European standard ETSI EN 302 208, the versatile family of MC9090-G RFID handheld readers can easily support global deployments. The superior construction is designed to withstand rigorous use in extreme environments and a wide variety of working conditions, providing the flexibility to be used on the manufacturing floor, in the warehouse, on the loading dock and out in the yard. An anywhere, anytime wireless connection provides the real-time information needed to streamline business processes, increase productivity and enable more strategic decision-making. For added flexibility, the MC9090-G RFID ER also offers ample battery life for a full work shift through superior power management. The solution also includes modular keypads and a rugged touch panel and display that is easy to read inside and outside the four walls.
“As the RFID market continues to expand, our customers are RFID-enabling more and more of their business processes. To do so, they need products that seamlessly meet the specifics of their real-world business requirements,” said Jason Kummerl, vice president of engineering, epcSolutions, Inc. “Motorola’s commitment to expanding its reader portfolio with new capabilities has enabled us to more effectively service key customers like iGPS, for whom extended range bar code scanning was a key requirement.”
The Motorola DS9808-R presentation imager and MC9090-G RFID ER are expected to be available through Motorola partners and Motorola sales in the second quarter of 2010.
