Competition Commission wins international award

The Competition Commission South Africa has won the award for “Agency of the Year in Asia-Pacific, Middle East & Africa” in the 2011 Global Competition Review (GCR) Awards held in Miami Beach, Florida on Friday, February 4, 2011. The GCR is an international competition law journal and news service that monitors competition enforcement and provides a network for practicing lawyers and economists internationally. The awards are decided by the international competition law community through a nomination and online poll over a period of three months

The other nominees in the category “Agency of the Year in Asia-Pacific, Middle East & Africa” were Japan’s Fair Trade Commission and Korea’s Fair Trade Commission.

“We feel honoured at this recognition by our peers. The Competition Commission has matured into an effective world-class organisation and this award is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of the Commission’s staff,” said Competition Commissioner, Shan Ramburuth.

The Commission was also short-listed in the category “Enforcement Matter of the Year” for its innovative settlement with Pioneer Foods concluded in November 2010. This award, however, went to the UK’s Office of Fair Trading in its abuse of dominance case against Reckitt Benckiser.
