Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras bat for the environment
The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras are undertaking a preseason tour to Worcester on 6 September to plant 100 trees around the town’s cricket ground, Boland Park. The initiative aims to improve quality of life in the community by adding some green colour to the urban environment, cleaning the air and increasing biodiversity.
A squad of Nashua Mobile Cape Cobra contracted players, as well as emerging Cobras from Boland and Western Province, will be planting the trees in partnership with Nashua Mobile and Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA). The squad will also spend some of the afternoon coaching about 150 scholars of the Boland region.
FTFA is South Africa’s national greening social enterprise that contributes to climate change initiatives, food security and greening. Nashua Mobile has supported the organisation since 2008 and has helped to plant more 13,100 trees through its Paperless Billing Campaign to date.
Says team coach, Paul Adams: “The team loves giving back to the communities that support us, so today, by partnering with Nashua Mobile and Food & Trees for Africa, we are celebrating the beauty and importance of trees. We encourage our fans to get involved.”
Tim Walter, executive head of marketing at Nashua Mobile, adds: “We are delighted that the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobra team is getting involved in a cause so close to our hearts. By planting more trees, we can combat climate change while improving the quality of life and the environment for South African communities.”
Nashua Mobile donates R10 to FTFA for each subscriber who opts to receive their monthly accounts via email instead of in the post. Nashua has also sponsored food gardens as well as seven hectares of Bamboo through FTFA’s Bamboo for Africa programme. Total donations it has made to the environmental organisation over the past three years amount to more than R1 million.
On 31 August, Nashua Mobile took part in an Arbor Month celebration with FTFA, which saw FTFA and its corporate partners plant more than 1 000 trees at homes around Atrec Stadium in Alexandra.
