Nokia Siemens Networks helps Polkomtel increase mobile broadband coverage

Modernizes Radio Access Network and expands HSPA+ and LTE networks

Polkomtel, the Polish operator of the Plus network, along with its partner operator Aero2, have selected Nokia Siemens Networks for modernizing and expanding their GSM, HSPA+ and Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks to provide better coverage and advanced voice and data services for mobile broadband users. The companies signed a framework agreement covering delivery, integration and maintenance of the operators’ mobile access network. A separate agreement for care services has also been signed.

“Polkomtel is currently looking into significant investments. I’m convinced that Nokia Siemens Networks, which has been our long-time partner, will allow us to meet any challenges”, said Tobias Solorz, member of the board of Polkomtel Sp. z o.o.

“The growing popularity of smartphones is putting huge pressure on operators’ networks. At the same time, customers’ service expectations are increasing”, said Dietmar Heinrichs, head of the Polkomtel customer business team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “As the world’s mobile broadband specialist and leader in LTE commercial deployment, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its innovative technology and global experience to support Polkomtel and Aero2 in offering best-in-class mobile services.”

Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks modernizes Polkomtel’s GSM network and expands the mobile broadband coverage with HSPA+ in the 900 MHz and LTE initially in the 1800 MHz frequency band. The company also modernizes the existing Radio Access Network (RAN) with its Single RAN platform based on all IP solutions. The deployed products include the energy-efficient, high capacity Flexi Multiradio Base Station and the advanced Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station.

The deployment will also include an upgrade and extension of Nokia Siemens Networks’ NetAct network management system, which enables consolidated and effective monitoring, management and optimization of Polkomtel’s and Aero2’s GSM, 3G and LTE networks. It also helps reduce network energy consumption.

With 63 commercial references in place for the delivery of LTE and 206 WCDMA radio customers, Nokia Siemens Networks is number one in the world in mobile broadband.
