Vodacom switches lights off in support of Earth Hour
Lights will go out around the world on Saturday evening, as participation in Earth Hour will create awareness on climate change globally.
Vodacom will also join millions by turning off all its non-essential utilities in 15 offices around South Africa, as well as all major advertising billboards and signage nationally, in support of Earth Hour from 20:30 to 21:30 on 23 March 2013.
“Although Earth Hour lasts only one hour, the awareness that it creates for the importance of sustainable practices around the world, is priceless. This is why we are committed to showing our support,” says Maya Makanjee, Vodacom’s Chief Officer for Corporate Affairs.
Looking beyond Earth Hour, Makanjee says that the Group is committed to reducing its energy footprint through dedicated energy efficiency programmes.
Vodacom recently launched the largest solar array of panels on a single building in Africa at its offices in Century City, Cape Town. The installation of the solar array is part of Vodacom’s ongoing drive to help reduce the amount of energy the company consumes.
