Having studied Mathematics at the University of Melbourne before dropping out for moral reasons, Assange is best known as the editor-in-chief of the whistleblower website WikiLeaks, which he co-founded in 2006 after an earlier career in hacking and programming. WikiLeaks achieved particular prominence in 2010 when it published U.S. military and diplomatic documents leaked by Chelsea Manning. Assange has been under investigation in the United States since that time. In 2012, facing extradition to Sweden, he took refuge at the Embassy of Ecuador, London. He remains there, having been granted political asylum by Ecuador, and will conduct a live interview via WeChat video conference that is not to be missed.
“In my role as WikiLeaks editor, I’ve been involved in fighting off many legal attacks,” says Assange, “To do that, and keep our sources safe, we have had to spread assets, encrypt everything, and move telecommunications and people around the world to activate protective laws in different national jurisdictions.”
