LG Electronics, a global leader in home entertainment technology, has done it again and marked a new era in home entertainment with the first-of-its-kind Curved OLED TV, the world’s first curved “organic” television powered by OLED technology.

What is OLED?

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology surpasses the quality offered by LED, LCD and plasma technology and sets the new standard for TV. OLED is made from organic (carbon-based) materials that emit light when electricity is applied to them. An OLED display works without a backlight, meaning it can display deeper blacks and is much thinner and lighter than an LCD display and that, in low light conditions, an OLED display achieves a higher contrast ratio than LCD.

The Curved OLED TV

The Curved OLED TV builds on the OLED technology and expands it further; delivering a never-before-seen ergonomically curved screen that is optimised for human vision. With an IMAX-like curvature, which fills the viewer’s vision more than any flat-screen TV, infinite contrast ratio with deeper blacks and brighter whites than a conventional RGB display, incredible colour accuracy and no visual distortion, the Curved OLED TV is the most immersive viewing experience to date. Furthermore, since it is an OLED television, it won’t take up a lot of space in your living room, nor will it break your back to move it around, as it is just 4.3mm thin and weighs only 20.1kg.

Adding to its appeal, the Curved OLED TV does not rely on complex LCD structures, but employs LG’s proprietary WRGB technology to produce exceptionally vivid, realistic images. The four-colour pixels (as opposed to the usual three-colour pixels in most televisions) light themselves, resulting in an exceptional viewing experience with natural colour and absolute motion clarity.

The modern design of the Curved OLED TV is also complemented by the almost transparent crystal stand, which creates the illusion of a floating screen.

Eco-friendly television

Features aside, the Curved OLED TV is also an eco-friendly product. In July 2013 it was certified energy efficient and “designed with the environment in mind” by three separate certification bodies: Intertek, the European Commission and the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT).

And, thanks to LG’s patented Smart Energy Saving technology, the Curved OLED TV reduces energy usage as much as 67% compared to conventional flat panel TVs.

With its Curved OLED TV, LG has once again set the benchmark for home entertainment, revolutionising the way that future TVs will be designed, and how we will watch them.
