The freshness dilemma
Ever opened a carton of milk well before its best-before date to find that it’s gone off? Keeping food fresh can be a struggle, but by following these rules, you can more easily preserve and enjoy your favourite foods.
Everything in its right place
Not every compartment in your fridge is going to be the same temperature. Each compartment is designed for a different kind of foodstuff – door compartment, for example, are not as cool as the meat compartment at the bottom. Keep foodstuffs in their right compartments to increase their lifespan and prevent cross-contamination. LG refrigerators include specially designed vacuum fresh compartments that keep your fruits and vegetables for longer.
Monitor your temperature
There’s no faster way to spoil food than to repeatedly expose it to fluctuating temperatures. Keep your temperature consistent by monitoring it. The ideal fridge temperature is between 1°C and 5°C. LG fridges come with smart monitoring systems that allow you to easily monitor and adjust temperatures, among other features.
Close the door
You open and close the door more often than you realise – for snacks, cold drinks, eggs, sauces and similar items. The problem is that the more you open the fridge door, the more cold air escapes and the more your meats and vegetables are exposed to temperature changes. You can reduce how much air escapes by using an LG fridge with Door in Door design, which lets you access select items without having to open the whole door.
A clean fridge is a safe fridge
Cleaning your fridge regularly is a must if you want to prevent your food from spoling prior to its expiry date. If you’ve spilled something inside the fridge, don’t let it settle. Spills can become a breeding ground for nasty bacterial colonies, so wipe them away immediately. LG’s hygiene fresh filter can help you keep your fridge clean because it filters harmful bacteria by 99.99% more than conventional fridges.
Storage tips
It’s best to keep food in its original wrapping. Meat, fish and poultry should stay in its store wrapping until the day of cooking. Keep dairy products in their original containers unless you have transferred it to a serving bowl, in which case you should cover the bowl with cling-film to avoid the dairy from spoiling. Hard cheese should be stored in the original wrapping only until you use them for the first time, after which you should wrap them in wax paper. Store all leftovers in clear containers or airtight wraps so that you can easily identify what it is and whether it is still fresh. Most leftovers will remain fresh for three to five days, depending on the temperature control.
Increase your efficiency
All fridges are not created equal. The less energy efficient your fridge is, the more energy it has to expend in keeping a consistent temperature. This means that you’re wasting more electricity in exchange for less fresh food. Fridges that come installed with industry-leading energy saving features like LG’s Inverter Linear Compressor easily maintain more consistent temperatures.
Get the right fridge
The biggest secret to keeping your food fresher for longer is to pick a fridge that will do the job for you. No matter how well you wrap and separate your foodstuffs, your choice of fridge will make the biggest difference in how long your items last. If your food keeps spoiling before the expiry date, consider buying a new fridge with the right combination of features to keep your food fresh and nutritious as long as possible.
