LG Electronics (LGESA) – a worldwide leader in mobile technology – revolutionised the smartphone market with the release of the G2 and its innovative Rear Key function. Despite the rave reviews and accolades, LG understands that progression can only take place with technological advancement and input from the end-users. Therefore, it took its mandate of Simple is the New Smart and engaged its users to find out what most they’d want from a smartphone and used it as guidance for the design of the G3.
The goal was to create a premium design that would not only offer full functionality and look great, but also feel great in your hand. The G3 delivers a simple style that enhances usability, strips out the unnecessary and leaves you with an improved user experience.
Easier to hold and use
Not only does the metallic hairline finish of the G3 look incredibly good, but it is also designed to avoid fingerprints or scratches. It is warmer, lighter and has a non-slip grip, which is particularly important for people on the move who don’t want to lose grip of their phones.
Understanding that grip is important, LG also added a pointed power key in the centre and added tapered edges and a curved back to offer further security. The G3’s elegant curvature, with its floating arc shapes and thin sides, are the result of hundreds of tests to find the ideal radius to provide portability and grip-ability.
After the success of the Rear Key feature, LG decided to expand on the concept for the G3 and redesign the Rear Key to maximise comfort factor. The design team also added further separation between the keys in order to make it more difficult to smudge the lens.
Take better pictures
Speaking of lenses, there’s nothing worse than the experience of trying to use your smartphone to take the perfect selfie only to be left frustrated because of a slow camera that gives you blurry snapshots. LG realised that its users want to shoot quality pictures fast and without fail; therefore, it implemented Laser Auto Focus in the G3 design. Similar to the technology of the radar guns that police offers use to measure car speed, Laser Auto Focus allows the G3 to achieve noticeably faster auto focus speeds compared to conventional smartphones.
The G3’s enhanced Optical Image Stabiliser Plus (OIS+) technology, with a 20% improvement on the G2 in camera-shake compensation, makes blurry photos a problem of the past. The dual flash LED allows for clear and bright shots, even in lowlight conditions, and uses two different colour tones (Cool & Warm) to maintain accurate colour reproduction. Depending on the environment, the dual flash LED can also control Auto White Balance (AWB) to ensure colours come out looking natural.
Displaying the future in Quad HD
The G3 features a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, a world-first for the smartphone market. This innovative display will allow the users to enjoy the immersive viewing experience of a tablet on a smartphone without being burdened by size or weight. Quad HD has the capability to render true-to-life image quality, providing four times the resolution of standard HD and almost two times the resolution of a full HD display.
Keeping with the Simple is the New Smart ethos, the display looks refined, not flashy. When the screen is turned on, the refined GUI and elegant wallpaper options complement each colour variant of the phone to create a streamlined appearance.
The G3’s design can be encapsulated in two words: smart simplicity. By listening to its consumers, LG has created a smartphone that fulfils the needs of the user and raises the innovation bar even further.
