LG South Africa recently hosted a VIP Smartphone Photography lecture in conjunction with Vega School of Photography.

Smartphones have become an integral part of daily life. Gone are the days when a mobile phone was simply a device to make a call and send text messages. The purpose of the cell phone soon shifted from a verbal communication tool to a multimedia tool. This shift led mobile phone manufacturers to the realization that integrating other technologies into their mobile offerings and expanding their features was a sure way of guaranteeing survival in an increasingly cut-throat market.

Today’s generation is a smart phone one. The smartphone has become the most powerful device in the hands of its users but owning a highly advanced mobile with all its unrivalled features and impressive built-in apps never means that we are great photographers. It is this premise that prompted LG to run a competition offering its consumers a chance to learn basic principles of photography and the creative techniques that can be applied to their mobile devices.

The Vega Smartphone Photography course introduced winners to photography using a LG’s flagship device, the LG G4. The interactive three-hour workshop covered topics ranging from basic shooting and composition with special reference to the G4’s impressive feature such as Manual Mode.

The LG G4 is the first mobile device to give users three different camera modes including a front facing camera, perfect for selfies, Automatic Mode and the revered Manual Mode. The manual mode allows the user to set the camera according to different light conditions, similar to a DSLR camera. This feature also allows for a user to set the Shutter speed, ISO, white balance and manual focus, allowing you to shoot clearer and brighter images, especially in low light conditions.  What does all this mean for photography novices? Simple really, you become a professional photographer at the snap of a button.

One of the lucky winners, Samuel Khuzwayo explained that in an age where mobile technology is advancing at such a rapid pace, the chance to learn about what each feature does, gives one more control over the type of photos you create.

“When you purchase a smartphone, you are never really sure what to expect but with the LG G4, you have the best of the best.  Through this course I have learned taking a great photo is not as complicated as it seems, 10% of it rests on the actual photographer while the rest is all up to the knowledge of producing an amazing shot”.

The course was a unique occasion that captured how much the rules are changing with devices like the LG G4 because while it’s still a mobile phone, the camera is very advanced. Therefore a basic understanding of photography becomes invaluable in capturing great images.
