Skills development critical for sustainable data quality

Quality data is the foundation of many business initiatives and goals including Enterprise Resource Management (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Big Data, and Master Data Management. If the underlying data is not accurate and ‘clean’, these initiatives can, and do, fail to deliver the promised value. The Certified Information Professional (CIMP) accreditation in Data Quality helps companies to build internal skills in this critical area.

Says Gary Allemann, MD at Master Data Management, “Data quality is a key business challenge of the 21st century. Quality has been an issue since data was first captured, and becomes increasingly challenging as the volumes of data increase and the uses for data expand. Regardless of your roles and responsibilities – manager, user, or technologist you will at some time be challenged by data quality issues. Quality is an equal opportunity issue, imposing itself in every aspect from transactional systems to web content and business intelligence.”

Automated data quality tools can contribute substantially to solving common data quality problems. However, in the famous words of Grady Booch – “A fool with a tool is still a fool”

Many organisations have invested in technologies without really understanding how to approach the underlying problems. Skills such as linking data quality outcomes to data governance objectives, assessing data quality, or defining a workable match strategy are fundamentals that influence whether any tool will be deployed successfully. Specialist training can save time and money by ensuring that tools are used appropriately.

The challenge that many organisations face is that specialist training of this nature has typically required resources to travel internationally, or has required specialist trainers to be flown in from Europe or the United States at great expense. The eLearningCurve CIMP Data Quality curriculum includes 12 online courses. Each course is accompanied by an optional Certified Information Management Professional (CIMP) exam.

eLearning is a great alternative, allowing delegates to complete modules towards their certification cost-effectively and at a time of their choosing.

“As a leading provider of data quality solutions in the African market we recognise that education is critical to the sustainability of our technology and consulting services. Clients need to be supported to develop internal data management skills and become self-sufficient. eLearningCurve brings international expertise and a consistent learning experience that is highly rated by our customers,” says Allemann.
