Metadata management has expanded well beyond data modelling in recent years. As the importance of data and information continues to grow, so the importance of metadata – accurate and available documentation and information about this data – will continue to grow. Metadata summarises basic information about data, ranging from where it is stored, to how it is used, to who has access to it.

Metadata describes both structured and unstructured information making it critical to successful analytics, as well as an enabler for master data management, data quality and data governance.
