Masterdata partner, Collibra, Named a Leader in 2016 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions
Master Data management partner, Collibra, a leader in data governance software solutions for business users, has been named a Leader in the August 2016 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions. The Magic Quadrant evaluated solutions from nine vendors that may suit the needs of data and analytics leaders. The full report is available for download from www.collibra.com.
“Gartner’s research confirms the need for a business centric data governance approach that extends beyond technical metadata management to ensure that business value is derived from metadata. Collibra supports African companies that are following the international trend to engage business stakeholders in ensuring that data supports their business goals,” says Gary Allemann of African partner, Master Data Management.
According to the Gartner report, “The growing need for organizations to treat information as an asset is making metadata management strategic, driving significant growth for metadata management solutions.”
“We believe Gartner’s positioning of Collibra in the Leaders quadrant validates our truly differentiated positioning,” said Collibra CEO, Felix Van de Maele. “We feel our industry-specific solutions like financial services and healthcare further strengthen our position. The Collibra capabilities give users control and trust of their data, support adherence to industry regulations, and address the growing need for organizations to manage their critical information assets.”
The Collibra approach to metadata as the foundation of data governance seems to be consistent with the report results. The Magic Quadrant survey shows 90% of survey respondents ranked data governance as a priority driving their metadata management improvement.
“The variety of business and technical metadata in use by large enterprises today demands a system that is flexible. It must provide the tools needed to source and enrich metadata in a way that’s consistent with its meaning and purpose,” said Van de Maele. “Collibra approaches the metadata management market from an overall data governance perspective, not an IT perspective. This ensures users can understand the complete enterprise context and lineage of their data to gain business value. We are delighted that Gartner has recognized the Collibra metadata management solution as an industry leader.”
The report’s authors note that, “Gartner predicts that the metadata management solutions market will double in size in 2017 (from an estimated value of $170 million in 2016) — driven by the information of everything, proliferation of data from the IoT, big data and data lake forces, and requirements for organizations to know what data they have — as information is recognized as an asset with an attached financial value (see “The Growth of the Metadata Management Tool Market Is a Reality”).”
The Collibra platform uses a combination of three approaches for metadata management sourcing and enrichment:
- Collibra Connect and its purpose-built connectors access the metadata stored in a large number of databases, applications, and other sources. This approach provides the ability to harvest the metadata as needed, and to recognize changes when they occur.
- Collibra allows users to “crowdsource” enrichment information from the stakeholders, stewards, and subject matter experts. This approach leverages the knowledge and experience of the entire organization, and can be easily scaled.
- Automated machine learning approaches are being added to facilitate automatic enrichment. As the scope and scale of big data increases, this will become increasingly important.
