What is NoSQL? A revolutionary mechanism for storage

May 3rd, 2017

Gary Allemann, MD at Master Data Management

Today, big data is increasingly being deployed in South Africa, to answer specialised questions in all departments, throughout the organisation. In addition to this, as data pours in, businesses no longer have time to struggle with the management thereof. Data needs to be stored in such a way that once a database is utilised the information is, easily available, scalable and flexible, and a NoSQL database does just that.

Although it does not have the same tight consistency that as an SQL database, due to its simplicity and speed, the NoSQL outweighs that of its predecessor. A NoSQL (originally referring to “non SQL”, “non-relational” or “not only SQL”) database therefore allows more ways in which to manage data.

Master Data Management’s enterprise information management education partner, eLearningCurve.com has consequently extended its curriculum with the new NoSQL course. This course focuses on NoSQL technologies for managing operational big data. This includes key-value, column stores, document stores and graph databases. Students will have a chance to learn about the ideal workloads for NoSQL in enterprises and where NoSQL adds value to an enterprise information strategy. In addition, they will also touch base on how to get the projects started or dropping the “not in production” label.

You will learn:

  • Big Data concepts
  • NoSQL definition and characteristics
  • Why and when to use NoSQL
  • NoSQL and data integration
  • NoSQL and data modelling

Gary Allemann, Managing Director at Master Data Management adds, “NoSQL is poised to increase dramatically in the next few years, as the nature of important operational data expands dramatically. Organisations should add NoSQL to their enterprise data possibilities.”

The “code-lite” session will address the NoSQL community as well as the key user community, providing guidance on how NoSQL technologies work and how to penetrate the enterprise. This practical session will help add a significant class of technologies into consideration to ensure information remains an unparalleled corporate asset.
