Data is fast being realised as a significant asset within an organisation, providing a number of benefits if harnessed. It can \u2018power\u2019 your organisation, underpin business decisions and sustain your business. Importantly, it is providing organisations with a competitive advantage.<\/p>\n
Business recognition of the importance of data is driving attempts to adopt data governance \u2013 bringing alignment between business goals and data management initiatives. Yet, embedding data governance principles into many organisations can be a bigger challenge than most realise. Many data governance implementations end up stuck in business siloes \u2013 particularly if driven by, or delegated to IT.<\/p>\n
Forrester Research touched on this problem in their 2014 Forrester Wave: Data Governance<\/a>. The report highlights the need to support Data Governance at a strategic level, bringing together and engaging stakeholders from across the business.<\/p>\n Master Data Management Managing Director, Gary Allemann, will be addressing this challenge with his presentation and paper on \u2018Moving From Passive to Active Data Governance\u2019 at the 2015 DAMA SA Conference<\/a>, that will be held at Vodaworld, Midrand on the 27th<\/sup> and 28th<\/sup> July 2015.<\/p>\n \u201cMost early data governance implementations can be regarded as passive,\u201d says Allemann. \u201cThis means that they focus on how to manage data issues once they have occurred. This approach can contribute to the creation of a data governance silo. By contrast, active data governance means embedding data governance into daily activities to stop problems before they occur.\u201d<\/p>\n Allemann\u2019s paper will also describe mechanisms to achieve this, based on Master Data Management\u2019s experiences at a number of clients.<\/p>\n
